This was an awesome day to be out in the woods shooting Field Target.  The temperature was comfortable, not too hot and humid, the sun came a went making the shadows change in the forest, and the breeze was a bit gusty, but not crazy.

Thank you to everyone who came out to make this a fun day.  We had 17 shooters with a few of our regulars away, also a few of our regular shooters were out sick – best wishes to all for a speedy recovery.  A different group of our regular shooters were waaay out of town at the WFTF World Championship in Northern Ireland. (Well done Team, and Way to go Joel!!)  It is always great to have Bob at our matches, but I wish that he could have been with Team Canada for the Worlds instead this week, unfortunately the Air Canada strike took him out of the game.

In preparation for the Canadian Nationals coming up in less than 3 weeks, I wanted to try out a few different target positions and some lanes that have not seen action this season.  It likely will not surprise anyone that not everyone was in love with all my targets….  A 1 inch squirrel target on a standing lane at a distance of only about 11 yards would not have been controversial at ground level, but it was slightly elevated and introduced a challenge to most shooters.  The Troyer factor for this target including the extras for Standing and Extreme Elevation, still only came out to 22 – exactly the same as Woody on lane #2, but the squirrel only dropped 29% of the time while Woody dropped 76% of the time.

Shooters might be surprised that the longer target on that lane for standing shooters (the moose with the full sized KZ) actually had a higher Troyer (27) and got knocked down exactly the same number of times as the elevated squirrel.  They were tied for the stingiest on the course.  Marc was the only shooter to drop the squirrel with both shots, and Dennis was the only one to get the moose twice.  (For those who wonder if the course designer has an advantage…. I hit the squirrel twice but did not drop it with either shot, and I dropped the moose once and hit one face-plate).  Modified shooters on this lane had two different targets set out at longer-than-usual distances for the size of the KZ.

The highlights in terms of scoring were Tom AGAIN posting the best score in Hunter at an impressive 112 (he hit every target on the course and only 8 failed to drop).  David D is still dancing on the verge of triple digits.  In the Modified division, Rob G again lit things up with a 56 only missing 4 targets (he made ALL of the unnaturally long ones). Larry had a great day and set a new personal best for lanes cleared – his practice time at the club is paying off!  In Open division, Dennis and Lanny were trading the lead back and forth all day and Lanny was up by two coming to their final lane…

Thank you to everyone who helped with setup and tear down and to our Marshalls for the day: Jeff, Ted, and Dennis.

Thank you to the Port Colborne club and members for making the range and facilities (and hot dogs!) available.

Another wonderfully hot day of shooting at HAHA! Temps were into the mid/upper 30s with the humidity and started from the time that we setup the course.

Big thank you to everyone that helped with the setup and tear down. We always appreciate your efforts in setting up the course!

Thank you also to HAHA Club for providing a fantastic place to shoot.  Being able to shoot from shaded positions made the day.

The course was more challenging as we ramp up for the Nationals in about a month.  This meant pushing the reduced targets further out and mixing and matching kill zone sizes to keep everyone on their toes.

We continued the challenge targets for the Modified shooter too. Putting a 15 mm at 48 yards and a 25 mm at 58 yards.

Combined with the breeze that kicked up as the day went on, everyone had fun and a challenge.

    A couple of call outs:

    High score: Rob G 60/60

Sleeper score: Mike P 106/120 – standardized, he had the third highest score, and he was shooting Hunter PCP, i.e., positionals and mark 1 eyeball range finding. Well done, Mike!

Best Rivalry – Tom K and Tony L, once again they were separated by one shot. This time Tom came out ahead. Great shooting and awesome to watch!

New shooters – Ray C, Nathan S, David D, Dave W and Tracy – great to see you all again and the progress that you’re making!

Everything was wrapped up and back in the shed by 2:30 PM.

A heads up about upcoming shoots and important info:

    • FT Nationals Early Reg cutoff, August 22nd.

We had nine shooters turn out to what was a beautiful day with sunny skies and little to no wind in the forest.  The course had a good variety of difficulty, ranging from quite easy to quite difficult.  The standing and kneeling shot were makeable, but as we all know, they are always easy to miss.

Due to commitments or illness, we were missing a number of shooters resulting in a number of classes being populated by a single shooter.  Guaranteed first place!

In WFTF Piston, Bob shot an impressive 48/60 and I know Ryan threw his rig together at the last moment, making his score quite respectable.

Andre was on fire in the Modified Open Piston, recording a 54/60.  Great shooting Andre.  Bill had difficulty holding the crosshairs still today, but if I am still coming out to every match and knocking down targets at 86 years old, I will be a very happy man.

Richard is still getting use to his new HFT500 and his scores are steadily rising.  Kim and Blane shot really well in the two hunter classes as their scores indicate.  Jeff shot in the Open Piston class, which includes the standing and kneeling shots, and I have noticed his scores climbing higher as well.  I broke out the old Steyr LG100 for the WFTF PCP class and was well pleased with the score, but not with missing 3 out of the four standers.  Easy to miss, like I said earlier.

A big thank you to all the shooters that made it out to the match and judging by the banter and laughter, enjoyed the day.  Thanks to the Grenville Fish & Game Club for allowing us to set up and maintain this beautiful 30 lane course in the woods.

I am looking forward to the regular monthly match on July 19th and have already started planning and setting up our August, One & Done match, shooting 50 shots on 50 targets.  This is my favorite monthly match at Grenville.

Keep shooting and I look forward to seeing you on a FT course.

For a day in July, the weather was pretty much as good as it gets in Canada.  Compared to the heat and humidity of the last few week, have a temperature in the low to mid 80s (28 degrees C), it seemed quite pleasant in spite of very little breeze.  We had 11 shooters make the trip and a big thankyou to all that showed up, particularly the folks from the west that have quite a long drive.

We had four classes that were one shooter shows.  Even though Rob had no others in his class, a 105/120 in Piston Hunter is a great score.  Andre is making a habit of doing very well and Pete was well pleased with his core as well.  Jeff had some issues with his click chart that I am sure he will work out.

The Hunter PCP class was very well contested with Radek taking the top spot in his first FT match.  Kim did great, hitting the  triple digits as well.  Marc was using a new gun and still managed to post a good score.

Ryan is getting serious now, shooting WFTF PCP and posted an impressive 55 to take top spot.  Richard was shooting WFTF PCP for the first time and posted a very respectable score.

Harold and I (Tim) rounded out the group, both shooting WFTF Springer.  Having a day where the crosshairs just stay still was something I really enjoyed today along with the score that came with it.  Harold shot very well, but experienced what happens when your scope is a full rotation High.  Having lost seven points to the mishaps, a 43 is a very good score.

Thanks to the Greville club for the use of a great facility and to Lynn who cut the grass on our side of the road to create a park like setting to our parking and greeting area.  Thanks to all he shooters who always create a very friendly and enjoyable atmosphere.

A reminder of the One & Done, WFTF type match at Grenville on August 16th, using a one shot per target format.  A big shout out to everyone about the CAFTA Nationals at the Port Colborne club on the second weekend of September.  Friday the 12th will be the setup day and the 13th and 14th are the competition days, with a 60 shot match each day.  I hope to see a great turnout shooting the excellent courses at Port.

    See you on the lanes.

The day dawned bright, clear and HOT! That was the theme for the day with temps into the high 30s with the humidity. Fortunately, there was a decent breeze from the wind AND the two large fans set out at either end of the shooting area. Combined with the wonderful, covered shooting area and piles of water it turned into a pleasant match.

First some shout outs! A huge thank you to everyone that helped with the setup and take down. Everything went super smooth and we may well have set a record time how quickly it all went. Your efforts gave us plenty of time for sight in work and easing into the shoot.

Special shout out to Jason S for bringing a cooler full of ice. Thank you! Having cold water made a difference.

Thank you to Rick and Bill for stopping by and checking out the action. Bill even pitched in with setup! Great to see you both and look forward to seeing you at the next match.

A final thank you to HAHA for providing an outstanding place to shoot and the covered shooting area. It contributed to the day’s success, thank you!

On to the shoot, we got to the sight-in lanes about 10:00 AM and ran until 10:40 AM. A bit longer than usual and welcome by many.

The shoot itself got going about 10:45 AM. The wrinkle this time was for the Modified group with an extra target being set out for them on the positional lanes. They choose three targets to shoot with the requirement to shoot the longest one on each lane. And where the long ones spicy! The “short” long one was 48 yards and ½” kill zone. The long target was on the long side of 58 yards and a 1″ kill zone. Got everyone thinking and definitely was a challenge.

For everyone else it was also a great mix of targets. More full size kill zones than we have seen recently and some fun target placements that caught more than a couple shooters out. A rotation on their scopes. On the spicy theme, the HAHA winds came to play and play they did! Kept everyone on their toes and scratching their heads.

Everything was wrapped up and back in the shed by 2:30 PM.

A heads up for upcoming shoots:

Weather was sunny with mild to moderate gusty winds. That combined with longer shots and ample reducers added up to some challenging shooting. Some of our top shooters were up to the challenge though posting impressive scores for the conditions. We had 25 shooters in total with four DNF. We had one junior and 3 new to HAHA shooters.

Thanks to the HAHA club for the use of their fine facilities. Thanks to all the shooters who helped set up and tear down and make this a great match. I also like to thank our Marshalls Jeff H, Ted M, Rob W. Big thanks to Chris Holmes for getting everybody registered and Tom K for the great photos.

Hope to see you all on Saturday the 14th at Port Colborne. Where Rob W has a plan to elevate our shooting experience.

  • Port Colborne June 14 Match Report

    by Rob W, Match Director

We finally had a great day with not even a sprinkle of rain!  June has been a month of low shooter turnout in past years, and this year was the same.  We had 16 shooters out to take advantage of the great day in the woods.

Thank you to everyone who came out to make this a fun day.  It was great to have Joel make the trek to join us for the day, also great to see Rick B. out to take a few shots.

Thank you as always to those who helped to setup and tear down the course and the sight in range, and to our Marshalls for the day, Marc, Bob, and Jeff.  Special thanks to Lanny for doing the trimming before the match.

The drier weather allowed us to get lane #1 back in operation although the far target on this lane caused difficulties for most people and it only dropped 12 times while facing 32 shots.  This put it in a 3-way tie as the second hardest target on the course.

I often try different things with targets to keep things interesting and challenging.  This month’s experiment was with a steeply elevated target.  It was interesting to hear the discussions that this sparked.  We had 16 shooters and likely had at least 12 different ideas of how to calculate where to aim to accommodate the incline.  All of our shooters that have competed in various WFTF World Championship matches have faced shots like this (and more extreme), but for most of us this was the first time.  Most shooters found the posture required to be at best uncomfortable, and at worst impossible.  We will not likely see this type of target in regular rotation and I will make a few changes to make it more shootable when it does come back into play.  The lane was actually 2 different targets mounted on a single platform – the first was a 1-inch naked paddle, and the second was a squirrel target with a ½ inch KZ.  The distance to the target was between 10 and 11 yards.  The first target got smacked down 22 times, the second (harder) one dropped only 13 times.  Just to give a sense of how the angle added difficulty, the very next lane had a target that also had a ½ inch KZ and was at about 13 yards and it got dropped 24 times.

The hardest target on the course was the far target on lane #11 which only dropped 7 times!

Lanny & Dennis decided to take on the positional lanes this month and jumped to Open Division. They showed that they can knock down standing and kneeling shots!  Lanny only let 3 shots get away.

Richard S also only left 3 targets standing, working from the Modified Division.

In Hunter Division, Mike P again led the pack and knocked down 51 targets.

Joel had 2 challenging lanes, and still carded a solid 53 in WFTF.

  • Port Colborne Match Report – 2025 May 24

The weather was threatening after several days of rain and wind, but the rain mostly held off and the wind was intermittent. The recent rain left things a bit muddy. The heavy cloud cover made the woods fairly dark for most of the day and made it challenging to see a few of the targets.

Thank you to everyone who came out to make this a fun day. We had 24 shooters.

Thank you as always to those who helped to setup and tear down the course and the sight in range, and to our Marshalls for the day, Ted, Bob, and Jeff. Special thanks to Tony, Lanny, and Dennis who keep the course trimmed and ready for matches.

In terms of results, Richard improved on last month and only left 1 target standing in the Modified Division. Ashley We and Rob G tied for 2nd spot with 55/60.

In Hunter Division, Mike P made his Port Colborne debut for the season and recaptured his spot at the top of the list, Tom was just 2 points behind. Kevin is loving the new gun and the switch to the PCP team (thanks to Dave for getting him set up (and not letting him near the new gun with those rusty wrenches!)).
Marc brought his TX200 out of retirement and showed that he still knows how to shoot a springer.

In Open Division, Ted turned in another solid match.

The WFTF Division had a larger turnout than usual with John C coming out on top.

Thank you to the Port Colborne club and members for making the range and facilities available.

  • Grenville May 10, 2025 Match Report

    by Tim MacSweyn, Match Director

The weather finally cooperated in a big way and we were able to get in our first match of the season at Grenville. It was sunny and stayed in the sixties to low seventies, making for a comfortable day. We shot the match on 15 lanes with two targets per lane. A number of unforeseen circumstances resulted in the attendance being down, but those of us that were able to make it enjoyed a good day and a fun, but challenging course. The wind was variable and switching making hold over a last second decision. Being able to shoot with both eyes open was certainly a bonus.

Kim and Blane, in the hunter division, both shot good scores on this first match.

Andre and Bill were at it again in Modified Open Piston Class, with Andre showing a great score for the first try of the season. At 85 years young, Bill is still knocking them down quite effectively.

The two Richards went head to head in the Modified Open PCP Class and Richard T., using his brand new HFT500 took top honours.

The difference between Open and Modified Open is that the discipline lanes can be shot from the same position as all the other lanes. Some are just unable to shoot the disciplines and this allows them to continue shooting in their own class.

Like Kim and Blane, Jeff and I (Tim) were pretty sure we would dominate our class. So we shot together and had a very enjoyable day.

Thanks to the Grenville club for the use of this excellent facility. Big thanks to all that attended and made the day a great success. I am looking forward to the June 21st date and hoping to see the number of shooters rise.

    Till next time.

The 2025 season at Port Colborne has begun!

The weather was threatening but the rain held off. The wind was strong, but clearly manageable based on some of the great scores! Thank you to everyone who braved the iffy forecast to make this a fun day. We had 22 shooters come out including 3 first timers at Port – welcome Arpan, Dave, and Peter! I hope that you enjoyed the day and look forward to seeing you regularly.

Thank you as always to those who helped to setup and tear down the course and the sight in range, and to our Marshals for the day, Ted, Marc, and Bob. Thanks also to our regular bushwhackers Lanny and Dennis for doing the heavy work and prepping the course earlier in the week!

There was a great example of the willingness of FT shooters to help each other out. Kevin’s gun packed it in during sight-in and his shooting partner for the day (Brian) tried to help him get it fixed. When that failed, Brian provided a loaner gun for Kevin to use. Unfortunately, Brian had to leave before the match ended – here Marc stepped in and had Kevin join him using his gun. Thank you very much to Brian and Marc for helping out a fellow shooter!

I hedged a bit for the expected wind, so the course was set up a bit shorter than usual. Even though we were in the forest, there was a fair bit of movement especially for the lower powered guns. The wind did not seem to bother some people though; Richard only left 4 targets standing in the Modified Division, and Chris H and Lanny both only left 7. Also, in Modified, Ashley showed that he is really getting along with his new scope as he zoomed up the leader board and came in just one shot behind the guy that brought him into FT last year.

In Hunter Division, Tom was in his usual spot at the top of the list and still made 103/120 in spite of the wind. Also in Hunter, in his first match at Port Colborne (and his second match ever!!), David D posted an awesome 94. Newbie Peter S also had a solid day in his debut at Port with an 80. Arpan was also in his first match at Port, and he pushed his sub-500 springer through the wind to post a solid score.

In Open Division, Ted and Geoff both had solid days – Ted is also liking his new scope!

The WFTF tag-team with their sub-12 FPE guns also turned in great scores as they tuned up their wind game in preparation for another world championship this fall.
