We finally had a great day with not even a sprinkle of rain! June has been a month of low shooter turnout in past years, and this year was the same. We had 16 shooters out to take advantage of the great day in the woods.
Thank you to everyone who came out to make this a fun day. It was great to have Joel make the trek to join us for the day, also great to see Rick B. out to take a few shots.
Thank you as always to those who helped to setup and tear down the course and the sight in range, and to our Marshalls for the day, Marc, Bob, and Jeff. Special thanks to Lanny for doing the trimming before the match.
The drier weather allowed us to get lane #1 back in operation although the far target on this lane caused difficulties for most people and it only dropped 12 times while facing 32 shots. This put it in a 3-way tie as the second hardest target on the course.
I often try different things with targets to keep things interesting and challenging. This month’s experiment was with a steeply elevated target. It was interesting to hear the discussions that this sparked. We had 16 shooters and likely had at least 12 different ideas of how to calculate where to aim to accommodate the incline. All of our shooters that have competed in various WFTF World Championship matches have faced shots like this (and more extreme), but for most of us this was the first time. Most shooters found the posture required to be at best uncomfortable, and at worst impossible. We will not likely see this type of target in regular rotation and I will make a few changes to make it more shootable when it does come back into play. The lane was actually 2 different targets mounted on a single platform – the first was a 1-inch naked paddle, and the second was a squirrel target with a ½ inch KZ. The distance to the target was between 10 and 11 yards. The first target got smacked down 22 times, the second (harder) one dropped only 13 times. Just to give a sense of how the angle added difficulty, the very next lane had a target that also had a ½ inch KZ and was at about 13 yards and it got dropped 24 times.
The hardest target on the course was the far target on lane #11 which only dropped 7 times!

Lanny & Dennis decided to take on the positional lanes this month and jumped to Open Division. They showed that they can knock down standing and kneeling shots! Lanny only let 3 shots get away.
Richard S also only left 3 targets standing, working from the Modified Division.
In Hunter Division, Mike P again led the pack and knocked down 51 targets.
Joel had 2 challenging lanes, and still carded a solid 53 in WFTF.
